The World Has Changed.
The Way Students Plan Their Futures Hasn’t.
For years, students have been handed a simple plan: choose a college, choose a major, graduate, start a career.
But a degree costs a lot more today than it used to. The path from education to meaningful work is less predictable. And AI is changing the kinds of skills that will matter, faster than most parents or students realize.
Following the old plan and hoping it works out is no longer enough. Students need a clearer picture of themselves and the world they’re entering before making decisions that will shape years of their life.
What You’ll Learn in This Presentation
- Why the old college-to-career playbook is failing today’s students, and the specific things that have changed that you need to know before your student’s next decision.
- Most students only plan around three things (college, major, diploma) when it comes to their future. Learn the other four critical pieces they’re missing and why these matter more than ever.
- The one part of themselves students need to understand to make wiser decisions about college, majors, and careers...and why research shows only a small number of students can discover this on their own.
- The surprising technology that’s changing how employers hire students into their first jobs. This is why a degree alone doesn’t make a student stand out anymore (and yes, this is even important for parents of high school students to understand).
- Why so many hardworking college graduates struggle to land their first job, and what your student can do now to reduce that risk (It’s more than just choosing the right field of study.)
- The most accurate way to uncover your student’s true strengths (these often stay hidden until they know exactly where to look), and why most career assessments fail at helping students understand what they’re truly “good at.”
Richard Harris
I’ve spent much of my career helping students navigate the path from education to meaningful work.
I began as a high school counselor, working directly with students who were trying to figure out what to study and which direction to pursue. I later led the hiring teams for two different multibillion-dollar companies, where I was directly responsible for hiring thousands of college students into internships and their first full-time roles.
I’ve watched students choose a path, and I’ve watched what happens when they reach the other side and try to turn their education into opportunity. In this presentation, I’ll share what parents and students need to understand before making important future decisions.
